JANUARY 2003

Molly is a six year old chihuahua mix and was owner released. The reason given was the owner "didn't have enough time to spend with her" because of their job. After signing the release form, the owner informed us that she had been having bladder control problems since being spayed in 1998.

For the first several days, we saw no indication of urinary difficulties. However, she began passing blood in her urine. She was taken for a veterinary exam, where it was discovered she had a urinary tract infection. Worse still, it was a secondary infection, with the main problem being bladder stones. Her bladder was so full of stones, they could be felt simply by rubbing her abdomen. It felt like she had tiny bits of gravel inside her.

The vet informed us that she had been suffering from this condition for a long time and with as many stones as she had, she was in a great deal of pain. Molly had to have surgery and soon. Due to her affectionate disposition, he felt she was a good candidate for the procedure. Amazingly, he informed us that she would be even more affectionate once the surgery was performed.

Unfortunately, the procedure would cost between $300 and $400. This far exceeded the amount the Society would be able to spend on a single animal. The alternative was to have her euthanized. Obviously, due to her wonderful personality and almost guaranteed chances of adoption, we hoped to find a way to have the surgery done.

Thanks to a very kind donation, Molly was able to have the bladder stones removed
. In addition, her teeth were in poor condition and while she was under anesthesia for the surgery, she also had dental work done and several teeth removed.

Needless to say, Molly was in a lot of pain for the next few days. Happily, she is improving every day and feeling much better. Sweet Molly will soon be making the move to her forever family.

Because of this precious little girl, we have established a fund, appropriately named "Molly's Fund." This fund will be used for cases such as Molly's, where surgery is needed and the funds simply are not available.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to this fund and help us help other animals, please make your check payable to "Henderson County Humane Society - Molly's Fund" and mail to: PO Box 706, Hendersonville, NC 28793-0706.

MARCH 2004 UPDATE

Molly was adopted by her new family on February 13, 2003. She has regular visits to the vet for checkups. Todate, she is still free from bladder stones. Just as the vet predicted, Molly is an even sweeter and more loving girl.
